The Bill Mason Outdoor Education Centre at Dunrobin
Outdoor Exploration in Western Ottawa
The Bill Mason Centre is an outdoor educational area that allows students to explore nature and learn of flora & fauna on a system of trails & boardwalks through a large marsh in western Ottawa. At this location a wide variety of animals & wildlife can be discovered & the extensive trails are quiet when the students aren't embarked on learning. One of the best parts is a sandy lake located just on the outskirts of the education centre boundaries. Here Tiger Beetles abound, frogs bask on the shoreline & beavers can be found hard at work.
A very large Common Eastern Bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) on the boardwalk at the Bill Mason Centre, Dunrobin, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The Bees were having a hay day pollinating the Bidens along the boardwalk of the marsh amongst the other insects including hoverflies & hornets. The marsh was alive with action. This very large Bombus was taking a rest on a boardwalk post & I was lucky to get some closeup shots. Unfortunately I usually I have a hard time capturing the actions of the bees & bugs due to their persistent movement for flower to flower. It is definitely an area of macro photography I need more practice with.
Bronzed Tiger Beetle (Cicindela repanda) Dunrobin, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. On the shores of the sandy lake there are always a great number of Tiger Beetles hunting and foraging for prey they are fast, small & beautiful. My favourite insect to capture, this I do not need practice in seeing that I have grown accustomed to the antics of these little guys. Next are the Autumn Dragonflies that were a delight to capture.
Autumn Meadowhawks (Sympetrum vicinum) Dunrobin, Ontario, Canada. The last one being the male.
