I was a crazed child brought up on Doctor Who, when I wasn't watching Sesame Street I tuned into Doctor Who in the evenings & I was obsessed. I started watching the series in the beginning of the 70s & Jon Pertwee was my Doctor & I never asked Who. The brilliant adventures have been ingrained on my little brain as a child & forever grew my interests in everything Science Fiction to come. We were lucky & fortunate to get great British programming from the BBC in Canada. I use to watch Space 1999 on the French channel & I loved loved it all as a child. American television didn't capture me as an interest as a young child I was totally raised on the British Programming that I found fascinating & intriguing.
Doctor Who is a British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called "the Doctor", an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. Its exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations and helps people in need.
Doctor Who follows the adventures of the title character, a rogue Time Lord with somewhat unknown origins who goes by the name "the Doctor". The Doctor fled Gallifrey, the planet of the Time Lords, in a stolen TARDIS ("Time and Relative Dimension in Space"), a time machine that travels by materialising into, and dematerialising out of, the time vortex. The TARDIS has a vast interior but appears smaller on the outside, and is equipped with a "chameleon circuit" intended to make the machine take on the appearance of local objects as a disguise; due to a malfunction, the Doctor's TARDIS remains fixed as a blue British police box.
Across time and space, the Doctor's many incarnations often find events that pique their curiosity, and try to prevent evil forces from harming innocent people or changing history, using only ingenuity and minimal resources, such as the versatile sonic screwdriver. The Doctor rarely travels alone and is often joined by one or more companions on these adventures; these companions are usually humans, owing to the Doctor's fascination with planet Earth, which also leads to frequent collaborations with the international military task force UNIT when Earth is threatened. The Doctor is centuries old and, as a Time Lord, has the ability to regenerate in case of mortal damage to the body, taking on a new appearance, personality and (from 2017 onwards) gender identity. The Doctor's various incarnations have gained numerous recurring enemies during their travels, including the Daleks, their creator Davros, the Cybermen, and the Master, another renegade Time Lord. I will be forever fascinated with this great, classic television series and the early years were my most favourite television viewing of my life. Yes some of it was very hokey but I loved it growing up as a youngling & it captured my imagination & forever changed me and who I am. My favourite Doctors in order are : Jon Pertwee; Tom Baker & lastly Matt Smith (still trying to figure out the Doctor as a female character ... )
